Dog safety in the car | Anything else greyhound | Forum

How do you keep your dog /s safe when travelling in the car? After seeing a dog escaping from a car after a motorway accident many years ago, for my peace of mind my whippets have been strapped into the back seats by the safety belt through a dog car harness and my Japanese Chin used to travel in a pet carrier strapped onto the front passenger seat.
Now I have just a whippet and a greyhound but also need to have a child safety seat in the back on a permanent basis, meaning whippet Banjo is strapped in on the back seat beside the child seat & Chancey has to fit into the "boot" space of my VW Polo hatchback. Of course this means she is vulnerable if my car gets shunted from behind so I have had this made for her.

Because I need access to the spare wheel it has to be removable so it turned out a little smaller than I hoped but for the short journeys that I do with the dogs (taking them to different walks in the area) it is plenty adequate for Chancey to lie down in. It also means she cannot jump out before I've grabbed hold of her lead while I'm lifting the hatch & I no longer have the worry of accidentally catching her tail when I slam it down!
It has a wire mesh base so I've lined it with cardboard, as you can see & have now put several more blankets in for her to lie on. This was a quick photo to send to the local firm that made it for me!
