MrT-and-Jeffie

March 2013

Mr T recently came into Brambleberry’s care after a non-accidental injury.  It seems he was hit over the head with something which caused a fractured skull and multiple brain bleeds.

He has been cared for at the Animal Health Trust, Newmarket where he underwent brain surgery to deal with the fracture and the bleeds.

I visited him today and found him a shy, very quiet dog, who – despite his recent experiences – is still willing to place trust in strange humans and will gently offer his head for petting.  He also lifts a leg and rolls over for belly rubs.  He does have some nervousness about hands and arms etc being over his head, but he has had a very bad experience, and as you can see, the poor fellow must be very sore since he has an incision which goes from the front of his head between his eyes right over to the base of his skull.

Nevertheless, he is recovering well, is keen to go out for a walk, and begs for food when anyone is in the kitchen!  He also has a teddy given to him by the staff at the Animal Health Trust, and a couple more for luck.  He carries the AHT one around with him.

It will be a long time before he is ready for another try at a home, but for now our problem is to raise money for his surgery. The bill is currently around £3,000, and Brambleberry has 6 months to pay.

Mr T has made an amazing recovery. He now runs in and out and plays with his toys as if nothing had ever happened. He mixes well with the other dogs, though he can be a little unwilling to share his toys. However, he is still showing no signs of aggression, and remains the same sweet dog as before his trauma. He is full of life and adores meeting people.

Greyhound Extravaganza, Animal Health Trust, Newmarket. 26th May 2013

Brambleberry Greyhounds took a stand at the Greyhound Extravaganza at the AHT, where we sold various hand-made items including knitted greyhounds, tag collars, jewellery for hounds and humans, hi-vis wear and greetings cards along with Brambleberry merchandise. We had a great day out with Mr T as the star of the show. He had an announcement made in his honour, and he was introduced to a lot of people who wanted to meet and pet him. He was quite over-awed by all the attention and bustle and noise, but he remained his usual gentle, polite self, and was completely unmoved by all the other breeds of dog, passing several tiny dogs lying in the grass near his feet without a second glance. He was allowed to rest in peace when he wanted (having been shown off by a RGT Head Office representative!) and spent quite some time in a small motorhome with the sliding door open, enjoying the shade and the peace and quiet – but also able to watch what was going on. He was certainly ready for his dinner when he got home!

Mr T will be making a few more public appearances this summer: the next will be at the Dick White Referral Centre’s Open Day, on 28th July 2013.

I will continue to post updates on Mr T if there is any news, together with new photos.

UPDATE July 2016:
Sparky is now twelve and no longer eligible for adoption. He has become one of Brambleberry’s long term permanent residents and has become a sponsor dog. If you would like to help out with his expenses, please click on the ‘donate’ button on the home page and add a message ‘For Sparky’ with your donation. Thank you!

Here’s Sparky, a very handsome black and white boy, eleven years old.

He might be elevan, but he thinks he’s only two! You wouldn’t believe his age, if you hadn’t been told.

Sparky is very friendly, great in the house, and loves his exercise.

Bandit is a very sweet-natured dog until something needs to be done, and then he can be tricky and nervous. He is also a very energetic dog and can jump higher than any greyhound I’ve seen! Rather than risk having him returned time and time again, he has become one of our permanent residents here.

If you would like to help with Bandit’s food and medical expenses, please click on the ‘donate’ button. And many thanks for helping one of our sponsor dogs!

Hero is twelve years old. He was returned to the kennel after living in a home for some years, and is a bit of a grumpy old man. He is quite happy living here with his companion April, who also is not considered adoptable at this time.

If you would like to help with Hero’s food and medical expenses, please click on the ‘donate’ button! And many thanks for helping one of our permanent residents.

UPDATE: June 2012. Hero, our permanent sponsor dog, has sadly passed away. Many thanks for your past support.
